Zinc oxide melts far above any pottery kiln on its own, so it fluxes in combination with the other materials around it, and it is used in mid and high fire glazes. It lowers a glaze's thermal expansion well below the level of any alkali, and it brightens a copper green while turning chrome a dull grey brown. A small addition helps mattes a surface, a moderate one fires clear and glossy, and around a quarter of the recipe grows the zinc silicate crystals that crystalline glazes are known for.
