Yellow Ochre supplies iron for colouring ceramic mixtures. Its yellow appearance before firing does not reliably indicate the finished colour. Fired results can include tan, brown and red-brown shades. Colour development depends on the amount added, the surrounding materials, and the firing temperature and atmosphere. Test it in the intended recipe and firing schedule before use in production. When substituting Yellow Ochre for another ochre or an iron oxide, do not assume equal weights will produce the same result. Differences in composition and iron concentration can affect both colour and the behavior of the finished mixture.
