Uni-Cast Castable Refractory
Castable Refractory is a dry refractory mix that sets hard with water, so a shape can be poured to fit the kiln instead of being built up from brick. The set material is dense and heavy, and it stores heat instead of insulating.

Castable Refractory is a refractory aggregate bound with calcium aluminate cement, and the cement forms a ceramic bond as the piece is fired. It sets by reacting with water, not by drying, and it is hard within a day. Water remains inside the set piece, some free in the pores and some bound into the cement, and it leaves between about 100°C and 350°C (210°F and 660°F). The first firing is therefore taken slowly with holds through that range, and thicker sections need longer, so the water leaves as vapour instead of building pressure inside the casting. It is cast into burner blocks, arch sections, kiln ports and patches. The mix ages in the bag, and old stock sets slowly.
- Refractory aggregate bound with a cement that fires to a ceramic bond
- Dense and heavy, so it stores heat instead of insulating
- The first firing is slow with holds, so the water inside leaves as vapour
- Best stored in arid and sealed environments or it will slowly react with humidity in the air which can deteriorate the product's usefulness
