Tin Oxide

Tin oxide is the opacifier that turns a glaze white. Part of it dissolves into the melt, so the whiteness depends on the rest of the recipe.

Suggested retail price. In-store prices and availability may vary by location.

In the firing, some of the tin dissolves into the melt and the rest stays as fine particles. How much dissolves depends on the recipe. Soda, potash and boron all take more of it into solution, so the same addition does not give the same whiteness in every glaze. The undissolved part scatters the light and turns the glaze white. A glaze commonly uses from about a twentieth of its weight upward, and more for a dense white. With a trace of chrome and calcium in the recipe it can turn pink instead.
