Tile #6 Kaolin
Tile #6 is a kaolin, and unusually for a kaolin it is plastic. It can be thrown and worked wet where a kaolin is normally short. It fires white and supplies alumina and silica to a body or a glaze.

Most kaolins are short, meaning they lack plasticity and crack when worked. Tile #6 is the exception. It takes and keeps a shape well enough to throw with, and it dries with real strength in the greenware, so it is used in porcelain and white stoneware bodies for the whiteness of a kaolin without the shortness that normally comes with it. In a glaze it supplies alumina and silica and keeps the slurry in suspension. It contains more potassium than most ceramic kaolins, so it begins to soften earlier in a firing than a low alkali kaolin does.
