Strontium Carbonate
Strontium carbonate is an active flux at middle and high temperatures. It makes the melt more fluid and gives a smoother surface. About seven tenths of its weight is strontium oxide, and the rest leaves as gas.

Strontium carbonate helps in lowering the viscosity of the melt, so the glaze fires smoother and glossier, not drier. It can be used in matte glazes depending on the composition and cooling to achieve desired gloss/matte balances. A glaze commonly uses between a twentieth and a fifth of its weight in strontium carbonate. It is also the usual substitute for barium carbonate in a glaze recipe. About three tenths of its weight leaves as carbon dioxide late in the firing.
- Strontium carbonate, about seven tenths of its weight is strontium oxide
- An active flux from the middle of the range upward
- Makes the melt more fluid and the surface smoother, not a matting agent
- Commonly a twentieth to a fifth of a glaze addition
- Has a high loss on ignition
