Self Supporting Pyrometric Cone 07

Cone 07 in Orton's self supporting series. It stands on the shelf on its own moulded base, so there is no plaque to set and no mounting height to get wrong, and its bend after the firing shows whether the ware reached cone 07.

This is Cone 07 in Orton's self supporting SSB series. Orton lists it bending at 962°C (1764°F) at 15°C an hour, 976°C (1789°F) at 60°C an hour and 987°C (1809°F) at 150°C an hour, each measured over the last 100°C of the firing. A cone responds to time and temperature together, not temperature alone, so the rate the kiln is climbing at decides which of those numbers applies. The base is moulded into the cone, so it stands on the kiln shelf straight from the box with no plaque or wire holder, and the height and 8 degree lean are set at the factory. That makes it the usual choice for witness cones and test firings. Orton lists cones in this part of the range for craft and art bodies, wall tile and glazes. Cones 010 through 3 are red iron bearing and can come out matte, green or bloated if the kiln is short of oxygen, so Orton makes the Iron Free SSK series across that range for reduction firing. It has finished bending when the tip is level with the base.
