Rutile Granular

Granular rutile is a milled natural mineral, almost all titania with small amounts of iron and other metals. The grains are coarse enough to survive the firing instead of dissolving into it.

Suggested retail price. In-store prices and availability may vary by location.

Granular rutile is used mostly in clay bodies, where the grains show as specks through the fired surface. It is a weak colourant and a strong variegator, giving tans and golds in oxidation and blues and purples in reduction. It also works in a glaze, though it is dense and settles quickly in the bucket, so a glaze containing it is stirred well before each use. The small amount of titania that does dissolve comes back out as crystals while the kiln cools, so the cooling rate matters as much as the recipe.
