Hydrostone is best mixed stiff and poured thick, and it sets hard, with a fine surface that reproduces small detail and takes knocks and rubbing without breaking up. It is used for models, patterns and master shapes that will be worked against repeatedly, and for solid castings that have to be handled. Setting is a chemical reaction, not drying. The powder takes water back on and grows interlocking crystals through the mass. That low water set leaves it dense with a hard face, so Hydrostone suits models and castings.
