Hydrocal plaster is a multipurpose gypsum cement. Its high green strength helps minimize breakage when removing casts from intricate latex molds and makes it particularly useful for thin or delicate sections. It can be used for both solid and hollow castings.
Hydrocal requires approximately 45 parts water by weight per 100 parts plaster. Proper water-to-plaster ratio, soaking, and mixing are important because they affect the strength, density, absorption, and overall performance of the finished cast. A machine-mixed set time of approximately 25–35 minutes is suggested.
Published physical properties include approximately 3,000 psi compressive strength one hour after set, 6,000 psi dry compressive strength, and 0.42% maximum setting expansion under controlled laboratory conditions. Hydrocal produces a stark white cast that is suitable for accepting colorants.
