The pencils are made for ceramic decoration and provide a more controlled drawing method than applying liquid underglaze with a brush. They can be used for detailed designs, test-tile marking, signatures, outlining, and shading. The pencils have a relatively soft pigment core and are best sharpened carefully with a knife rather than a standard pencil sharpener. They have a firing range of approximately Cone 02–12. The pigment can also be softened or blended with water, allowing the pencil to produce both drawn lines and wash-like effects. Testing is recommended, as colour development can vary with the clay, glaze, firing temperature, and kiln atmosphere.
