Pioneer Kaolin is a secondary kaolin and widely used in ceramic body and glaze formulations. Its relatively broad particle-size distribution provides useful plasticity and green strength compared with many finer kaolins.
Pioneer is suitable for casting, pressing, and extrusion bodies and can be used as a source of alumina and silica in ceramic formulations. Published reference data indicate that approximately 55–65% of the material is finer than 2 microns, with a mean particle size of approximately 1.0–1.2 microns.
Pioneer fires relatively white, with a typical iron oxide content of approximately 0.4%. Reported chemistry is approximately 45.4% silica and 38.3% alumina, with smaller amounts of titania and iron oxide. Actual properties may vary by source and batch, so testing is recommended when substituting Pioneer into an existing formulation.
