OM#4 is a fine, very plastic ball clay, and it makes a body workable. A porcelain or white stoneware built on kaolin alone is short and tears on the wheel, and adding a share of ball clay makes it plastic enough to throw. It is added to casting slips for the same reason, and to a glaze in a small amount, where its fineness keeps the heavier materials in suspension. Most bodies contain up to about a fifth within an incorporation, since it brings increased drying shrinkage along with the plasticity.
