Nickel Oxide

Black nickel oxide is a colouring oxide, most often used in small amounts to modify other colours. The black and green forms are similar compounds, but the black is calcined at a lower temperature, so it is more porous, finer, and has a much greater surface area which aids in its higher chemical reactivity compared to the green form.

A small addition of black nickel oxide alongside another colouring oxide softens and greys the result, and many ceramic greys are built this way. On its own it gives greys and browns, and in some glaze bases greens, blues or pinks. The colour depends on the glaze base and the cooling rate, so a test on the glaze in use is worth doing before a full batch. It is refractory, and a large addition stiffens the melt and can dull a glossy surface, so it is normally used at a few parts in a hundred or less.
