Manganese Granular

Granular Manganese is a crushed and screened manganese ore, kept coarse on purpose. The grains are too large to dissolve into a clay body or a glaze, so each one fires as a dark speck.

Suggested retail price. In-store prices and availability may vary by location.

Granular Manganese is screened to grains about the size of sand, and a grain that large reacts only at its surface, so it survives the firing as a speck. Below about 1200°C (2190°F) nothing around the grain melts, and the speck has a hard edge. Above that the edge softens into the surrounding glass, and the tight speck of a low firing becomes a soft halo in a stoneware firing. The ore contains some iron, which shifts the speck from brown toward black. Speckled bodies, glazes and slips use from a fraction of a percent to a few percent, and the material is dense, so a glaze containing it needs stirring before each use.

  • A crushed and screened manganese ore, not a refined chemical
  • Screened to a sand sized grain, so each one fires as its own speck
  • Hard edged below about 1200°C (2190°F), and a soft halo above that
  • Dense, and quick to settle in a glaze bucket
  • Depending on clay body composition this material can cause bloating
