Gold Coast Luster is a genuine gold overglaze, brushed onto work that has already been glazed and fired, then fired again at a low temperature. The fired film is bright metallic gold and only a fraction of a micron thick.

Gold Coast Luster is brushed onto a glaze that has already been fired to maturity, and the finished gold takes on the surface beneath it, so a glossy glaze gives a mirror bright gold and a satin or matte glaze gives a matte gold. The gold is dissolved in oils and resins that burn away during the firing, so the firing is run slowly and vented through the early stages and finishes around cone 018. The film is very thin, so finished ware should be washed by hand and kept away from scouring pads and dishwashers. It is applied with a dedicated brush, cleaned with mineral spirits.
