Kyanite is a clay body material. Its blades sit in the clay as a refractory aggregate, reduce shrinkage and open the body. Kyanite converts to mullite at high temperatures, the conversion typically begins around 1250°C and needs either higher temperatures or to be held for some time, before much of it changes. Cone 6 is cooler than that starting point and cone 10 is only slightly hotter, so in a studio firing most of the kyanite stays as kyanite. It contributes the properties of the mineral itself, low expansion, refractory and bladed instead of granular.

- A refractory, low expansion aggregate in a clay body
- Reduces shrinkage and opens the body
- Most of it is still kyanite at the end of a studio firing
