A stilt lifts a fully glazed piece off the kiln shelf on three fine metal points, so glaze on the foot cannot fuse the pot to the shelf. The A-6 spans 64 mm (2 1/2 in) between points. Choose a stilt a little smaller than the foot it carries so the points sit under the base, and grind off the small marks the points leave after firing. Stilts are used mostly for low-fire glazed ware.
