Iron Oxide Yellow
Iron Oxide Yellow is a synthetic iron pigment made under controlled conditions, so one bag matches the next. The yellow stays in anything left unfired, and it turns red in the kiln.

Iron Oxide Yellow is a hydrated iron oxide. The bound water leaves between about 250°C and 300°C (480°F and 570°F), and the pigment turns red, so every firing converts it, even the lowest decorating temperature. What comes out of the kiln is the tan, amber or brown that iron gives depending on composition. The yellow remains only where nothing is fired, so the pigment is also used in concrete, mortar, lime plaster, clay paint and artists' colours. It is very light for its bulk, so a weighed addition looks larger than expected, and it takes up more water in a slip than the weight suggests.
- A synthetic iron pigment, consistent from one bag to the next
- Yellow unfired, red in the kiln, with the change complete by about 300°C (570°F)
- Very light for its bulk, so a weighed addition looks larger than expected
- Acidic enough to thicken a deflocculated slip
