Plainsman Halloysite

Plainsman Halloysite is a halloysite bearing kaolin type clay ground by Plainsman. It is cream coloured raw, fires light, and is unusually workable for a kaolin, and it is valued for the brown and red flashing it develops on bare surfaces in wood firing.

Suggested retail price. In-store prices and availability may vary by location.

It is ground from the raw clay, so it keeps some coarser particles and occasional iron bearing material, and the iron bearing parts of the deposit are blended through the product, so it is not a uniform white and flashing is not guaranteed. Ball milled it makes a good flashing slip. On its own it has an absorption of 7 to 9 percent at cone 6 and 2.5 to 4 percent at cone 10, a drying shrinkage of 5.5 to 6.5 percent, and a fired shrinkage of 10 to 12 percent at cone 6 or 12 to 13 percent at cone 10, which is higher than a typical kaolin because of the halloysite, so a body using it needs room for its water demand and shrinkage. It is supplied ground to 10 mesh. That grind is coarser than a 200 mesh industrial kaolin and can carry harder impurity particles, so it is not recommended for porcelain or very smooth bodies. Swapped for another kaolin it changes water demand, shrinkage, maturity and fired colour, and the figures above are for the material alone and do not predict a finished body.
