Plainsman Clays | GRME
Grog Medium
Medium Grog sits between the coarse and fine grades, and it is felt as an even grain instead of separate grits. It opens a body and reduces its shrinkage, without the harsh surface texture the coarse grade leaves.

Medium Grog keeps drying channels open through ware, however reduced compared to the coarse grade, and the grains are small enough that a rib closes a thrown surface over them. Like every grog it has already been fired, so the grains do not shrink again, and a body containing them contracts less while drying and less again in the kiln. It gives up some of the support the coarse grade offers, and in return it is smoother under the hands and on the finished surface. It is used in handbuilding bodies and in throwing bodies with some tooth, and it is a good single grade for a studio that stocks only one.
- The middle of the three grades, felt as even grain
- Opens a body, and reduces shrinkage
- Smooth enough for a rib to close a thrown surface over it
