Grog Coarse (STKO)
Coarse Grog is the largest of the three grog grades we make, with grains big enough to see and to feel between the fingers. Of the three it does the most to support a heavy form and to let a thick wall dry evenly.

Grog is fired clay, so the grains do not shrink again, and a body containing them contracts less as it dries and again in the kiln. Coarse grains also keep drying channels open through a thick section. A rigid grain allows the clay around it to contract while maintaining structural integrity, so water keeps moving out of the ware instead of being sealed in behind a dried surface. This makes it the grade for sculpture, thick slab and coil work, where sag and uneven drying are the main concerns. The grains stand out on a thrown surface, so the coarse grade is best suited to handbuilt work.

- Supports a heavy or thick form better than the finer grades
- Keeps a thick wall drying evenly
- Best suited to handbuilt and sculptural work
