Ferro Frit 3134

Frit 3134 is a high boron calcium borosilicate frit that contains low amounts of alumina. It melts at a low temperature and runs, so it works best in a recipe with enough clay to supply the alumina.

Frit 3134 contains low amounts of alumina. A glaze needs some alumina to be stable, so in a recipe based on this frit the alumina can come from clay. That means the recipe can use more clay than usual, and the extra clay keeps the glaze in suspension. The boron makes it a strong melter at low temperatures and a common replacement for Gerstley borate. It flows around 870°C. Boron usually lowers thermal expansion, but this is not a low expansion frit, because it contains enough calcium and soda to outweigh the boron, so a glaze that fitted before can craze once this is added.
