Barnard Slip Clay

Barnard Slip Substitute is a blended dark colourant, high in iron with a good share of manganese. It is a colourant and not a glaze on its own, so it is added to a recipe that supplies the melt.

Suggested retail price. In-store prices and availability may vary by location.

Barnard Slip Substitute is used in glazes, slips and washes wherever a deep brown or a black is wanted, and recipes commonly use between a tenth and half their weight of it. Iron and manganese together reach a black that neither gives alone, and at these loadings the iron is concentrated enough to crystallise as the kiln cools. The amount of flux needed around it changes with temperature. At cone 10 it melts to a surface with very little added, while at cone 6 it needs considerably more, so a cone 10 recipe fired at cone 6 comes out dry and matte unless the flux is increased.
