Zircon, the compound of zirconium and silicon, barely dissolves in a glaze melt. It stays in the fired glaze as fine particles that scatter light, so the glaze fires opaque and white.

  • Zirconium, aluminium and silicon oxides
  • Can be used with or without zinc in the glaze
  • Ceiling 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9
  • A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
