A black made without cobalt sits at the edge of a brown chemistry, and the window is narrow, so a small change in the glaze can push the colour back toward brown. Zinc from a glaze melt is the main risk, so Mason's note for this stain is to keep zinc out of the glaze altogether. In a zinc free glaze fired in oxidation to 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, or below, it fires a full black.
- A black without cobalt, from chromium, iron and manganese in one crystal
- Needs a zinc free glaze, or it drifts toward brown
- Ceiling 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
