Black is reached by subtraction. Iron, cobalt and chromium each absorb a different part of the spectrum, and together they cover all of it, so the pigment reflects almost nothing. This three metal combination is a standard route to a ceramic black. Mason marks it for use in porcelain bodies and sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing.
