Pansy Purple works as two colourants in one pigment, and the chrome tin red sets the recipe, because cobalt survives almost any firing and the red does not. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia and boron, and it needs an oxidising firing the whole way to temperature. In that base it fires a clear purple. In a glaze that falls short of it the red drops out first and the result reads blue.
- A clear purple from chromium and cobalt together in a tin silicate
- No iron or nickel, so nothing dulls the colour
- Needs a glossy glaze with 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide and no zinc
- Oxidising firing throughout
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
