Blackberry Wine combines a chrome tin red with cobalt blue in one pigment, and the red half decides the recipe, because cobalt survives almost any firing and the chrome tin red does not. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia, and it needs an oxidising firing to a ceiling below cone 10. In that base the colour fires a deep wine. In a glaze that falls short of it the red drops out first and the result reads blue.
- A dark red purple from chromium, cobalt, iron and nickel in a tin silicate
- Needs a glossy glaze with 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide and no zinc
- Reads blue in a glaze short of calcium, because the red drops out first
- Oxidising firing, ceiling below cone 10
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
