The vanadium sits in a pocket within the zircon framework, and it leaves a narrow window open in the blue green part of the spectrum. Small shifts at either edge of that window move the colour between a light blue and a green, so this chemistry lands on turquoise. Zircon barely dissolves in a glaze melt, so the colour is steady across a wide range of bases. Mason sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing.
