Mason Stain 6304 Tin Violet reaches violet from chromium alone, with no cobalt. It is a chrome tin pigment pushed far enough toward blue that Mason lists it as a violet.

Tin Violet is made on the same calcium tin silicate as the chrome tin pinks, and one colourant does all the work, so the violet is a clean hue and not a mixed one. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia and boron, and it needs an oxidising firing. The calcium matters because it is part of the pigment chemistry itself, and a glaze short of calcium breaks the colour down and fires pale. In that base, fired in oxidation all the way to temperature, the colour comes through as a clear violet.

  • A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
