The cobalt sits in the positions in a zinc silicate crystal that give a cobalt blue, and the zinc is part of the pigment, combined and fired in before the stain is bagged, so the glaze does not need to supply any. The powder colours glazes, slips and porcelain bodies alike. Mason sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9.
