Dark Chocolate reaches its depth with manganese alongside the iron and chromium, a different route to brown from the zinc based pigments, and the result is darker and flatter with little red left in it. Manganese is the element to watch, since a manganese rich pigment can bloat a glaze at a heavy addition, so it is used at moderate amounts. Fired in oxidation to 1260°C (2300°F) or below, it gives a deep brown that reads nearly neutral beside a warmer one.
- A deep, near neutral brown from chromium, iron and manganese in one crystal
- Darker and flatter than a zinc based brown
- Ceiling 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
