Saturn Orange Mason Stain

Mason Stain 6121 Saturn Orange is an orange from the iron rich end of a zinc iron chromite pigment, the same chemistry as many brown stains. Mason lists it under its brown chemistry for that reason.

Saturn Orange reaches orange by where it sits within the zinc iron chromite chemistry and not by being a different pigment. With no chromium the colour is yellow, a little chromium takes it to red, more deepens that to brown, and a full charge gives grey. Orange sits near the iron rich end of that sequence. Zinc is part of the pigment, so a zinc bearing glaze suits it. Mason sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing.
