Dark Golden Brown sits on the warm side of what this chemistry gives. The colour depends on how much chromium sits against the iron in the crystal. A little chromium gives yellow and red, more gives brown, and a full charge gives grey, so a warm golden brown falls on the low chromium side. Zinc is part of the pigment, so a zinc bearing glaze suits it and Mason marks that combination as the better one. Fired in oxidation to 1260°C (2300°F) or below, the warmth comes through.
- A warm golden brown from the iron rich side of a zinc bearing crystal
- A zinc bearing glaze suits it
- Ceiling 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
