Woodland Brown is built around zinc, so a zinc bearing glaze suits it. Zinc from a glaze melt turns many stain colours brown, and a pigment that already contains zinc is stable against it, so Mason marks a zinc bearing base as the better one for this stain. The brown comes from iron and chromium sharing one position in the crystal, and the balance between them sets the shade. Fired in oxidation to 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, or below, it gives an even mid brown.

  • A soft mid brown from iron and chromium in a zinc bearing crystal
  • A zinc bearing glaze suits it, and Mason marks that as the better base
  • Ceiling 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9, with an oxidising firing
  • A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
