Dark Red Mason Stain

Mason Stain 6088 Dark Red is a deep red from a cadmium sulphoselenide crystal sealed inside a zircon shell. The shell is brittle, so a short mix suits this stain.

Dark Red keeps a deep red through a glaze firing because the colourant sits inside a zircon shell and not dissolved in the glass around it. The shell is brittle, so the stain is stirred into a batch near the end of mixing, and a long grind cracks the shell and lets the colour go. The colour comes up strongest in a glaze fluxed with calcium or boron. Mason sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9.
