Sulphur and selenium share the same position in the colourant crystal, and the balance between them runs the colour from yellow through orange to red, with Tangerine sitting at orange. The zircon shell around the crystal protects the colour through a glaze firing. The shell is brittle, so the stain is stirred into a batch near the end of mixing, and a long grind cracks the shell and lets the colour go. The colour comes up strongest in a glaze fluxed with calcium or boron. Mason sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9.
