Most ceramic stains take a metal into the host crystal itself. Red is built the other way round. The colourant keeps a crystal of its own, and the zircon forms a shell around it, sealed shut in the firing that makes the stain, and the red depends on that shell staying whole. The shell is brittle, so the stain is stirred into a batch near the end of mixing, and a long grind cracks the shell and lets the colour go. The colour comes up strongest in a glaze fluxed with calcium or boron. Mason sets the ceiling at 1260°C (2300°F), about cone 9.
