Manganese takes the place of aluminium at points in the corundum crystal, and in that position it absorbs across the green part of the spectrum, so the colour that comes back is pink. The crystal and the colour form together when the stain is calcined, and the stain is supplied as a fired and milled powder. Mason lists it among its body stains, so it is used in slips and clay bodies as well as in glazes.
