Deep Crimson Mason Stain
Mason Stain 6006 Deep Crimson is the most saturated chrome tin pigment Mason makes, a dark crimson. The depth is in the pigment itself, so it does not depend on a heavy addition.

Deep Crimson reaches a dark crimson at a modest addition, because the saturation is built into the pigment and not reached by loading more of a lighter stain into a glaze. That keeps the glaze closer to how it behaved before the colour was added. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia and boron, and it needs an oxidising firing. The calcium matters because it is part of the pigment chemistry itself, and a glaze short of calcium breaks the colour down and fires pale. Mason sets the ceiling below cone 10.
- A dark saturated crimson from chromium fired into a calcium tin silicate
- Depth from the pigment, so a modest addition is enough
- Needs a glossy glaze with 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide and no zinc
- Low magnesia and boron, and an oxidising firing
- Ceiling below cone 10
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
