Crimson is the reddest single pigment Mason makes in the chrome tin chemistry, and it is a single calcined pigment and not a blend. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia and boron, and it needs an oxidising firing. The calcium matters because it is part of the pigment chemistry itself, and a glaze short of calcium breaks the colour down and fires pale. In a base that already has the calcium it needs, the crimson comes through at full strength from a modest addition. Mason sets the ceiling below cone 10.
- A true crimson from chromium fired into a calcium tin silicate
- Full strength from a modest addition in the right base
- Needs a glossy glaze with 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide and no zinc
- Low magnesia and boron, and an oxidising firing
- Ceiling below cone 10
- A fired and milled pigment, so it disperses into a glaze without grinding
