Alpine Rose is a single calcined pigment and not a blend of stains, so the colour is clean. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia and boron, and it needs an oxidising firing. The calcium matters because it is part of the pigment chemistry itself, and a glaze short of calcium breaks the colour down and fires pale. In that base it fires a mid pink with a cool cast, and adding more deepens the pink without shifting the hue, so a shade is reached by the amount alone. Mason sets the ceiling below cone 10.
