Chrome tin colours depend on the glaze around them more than many stains do. The glaze needs to be glossy, high in calcium (Mason gives 6.7 to 8.4 percent calcium oxide), free of zinc and low in magnesia and boron, and it needs an oxidising firing. The calcium matters because it is part of the pigment chemistry itself, and a glaze short of calcium breaks the colour down and fires pale. In that base Shell Pink fires a pale, even pink. Mason suggests taking the calcium from a source that also supplies silica, such as wollastonite, and reducing the silica elsewhere in the recipe to match. Mason sets the ceiling below cone 10.
