Frosted Melon PC-49 Potter’s Choice Glaze

Frosted Melon is a very unique glaze with some qualities that can be exploited for additional interest. It has a massive, beige float with heavy application. This float “cracks”, showing the green of the glaze below while still maintaining a smooth, satin surface. This subtle glaze is beautiful on smooth and textured ware alike. The glaze colour is susceptible to variation due to iron fuming from other pots nearby in firing.

This colour is food safe. Potter's Choice is a cone 5/6 glaze made to give the look of a reduction firing in an electric kiln. These glazes move as they fire. They break where they run thin over an edge or a carved line and float a second colour to the surface, which is why they show best on textured work. The line is also made for layering over a Celadon, a Satin Matte or another Potter's Choice colour. Two coats over two works for one Potter's Choice over another, and three over three when a Celadon or a Shino is underneath. If the glaze underneath is a fluid one the layered result can run. On its own it takes 3 to 4 brush coats over cone 04 bisque, with each coat left to dry before the next, and a medium-speed firing to cone 5 or 6, 1186 to 1222°C. The clay body changes the result too, so the same glaze will not fire the same over a buff body as it does over a dark one. Fire a test tile with each new batch. Select colours are also available in gallons.
